Virus threat to cell phones?

Other say wireless plague so far exist only in labs
//The Associated Press//
Malicious programs that can delete address books. Junk messages that flood a cell phone's inbox. Stealthy code that uses Bluetooth wireless technology to sneak onto handsets. Scared yet? Security experts say plagues like these will target mobile phones, but others contend cell phone viruses are the tech equivalent of smallpox- To the best of anyone's knowledge, they exist only in labs.

'We've had no reports of people actually seeing these viruses in their daily use,' said Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant with London's Sophos PLC. 'The only reports we've seen documented are antivirus researchers sending them to each other in their labs..

Santy Worm Morphing into Pesky Variants

Although Google moved fast to stop the original Santy worm, it apparently was not fast enough. Santy variants are making the rounds using the AOL and Yahoo search engines
A new Internet worm dubbed the Santy worm targets U.S. search engine Google and other search engines.
Although Google moved fast in a bid to stop the initial Santy worm, apparently it was not fast enough.
Variants of Santy recently made themselves evident to non updated phpBB-powered bulletin board sites by erasing their pages. Santy variants are making the rounds using the AOL and Yahoo search engines and are still targeting Google as well.
Santy.B is a worm that affects servers running a version of the application phpBB prior to 2.0.11. phpBB is an open source program used to easily create bulletin boards, forums and newsgroups.
Bear in mind that your computer cannot be affected by Santy.B unless a vulnerable version of phpBB is installed.
If your computer is running a version of phpBB prior to 2.0.11, please update it to this version or later.

Computer Security 101 Free online course

Computer security can be a difficult concept for many people. There are so many strange words and acronyms that it can seem like someone is talking a foreign language when they are discussing it.
The Free Computer Security 101 Class begins by explaining what some of those terms and acronyms mean. If you understand what they mean and how they're used with your computer and the Internet, then you can also understand the problems they cause and what you need to do to protect yourself.

This Class will also cover many of the attacks and vulnerabilities to watch out for and the common defense mechanisms like antivirus software and firewalls.

It is a 10-day class followed by a Final Exam. I just started this course. The 10 days start when you sign up start and is given by http://netsecurity.about.com
You will receive the first lesson as soon as you sign up, and the other nine lessons and the Final Exam around 8am ET the next ten days.
You cannot change your email address in the middle of the class, so be sure to use an address you'll have access to for at least 10 days.

Again, here is the link for 'the class'

New IE Flaw May Help Phishers

A newly reported security problem in Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser allows attackers to create a fake Web site that looks exactly like a genuine site.

The vulnerability lets an attacker display any Web site while the address bar in IE will display a trusted Web address and even show the icon indicating SSL (Secure Socket Layer) security, security researchers warn.
The issue could result in more sophisticated phishing scams, a prevalent type of online attack that typically combines spam e-mail messages and Web pages that look like legitimate e-commerce sites to steal sensitive information such as user names, passwords, and credit card numbers.
The problem was discovered by a security researcher from the Greyhats Security Group and reported last week by Danish security company Secunia. The vulnerability lies in an ActiveX control in IE and has been found to affect version 6.0 of the browser running on Windows XP (news - web sites) with Service Pack 2 and earlier versions, according to a Secunia advisory.

E-Holiday Card Virus Packs Ugly Punch

Manifested Destiny: "A new virus strain masquerading as electronic Christmas cards is accounting for one in every 10 e-mails hitting in-boxes, security experts warned Wednesday.

The W32/Zafi-D worm, which originated in Hungary, is using mass-mailing and P2P (peer-to-peer) techniques to squirm through in-boxes and slow network traffic to a crawl.
The worm, which poses as a Christmas greeting, has the ability to replicate in as many as 19 languages, which makes it a 'very serious threat' to computer users worldwide, said Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at Sophos Inc.
Cluley told eWEEK.com the Zafi-D mutant accounts for 75 percent of all virus reports at coming into the company's monitoring stations in the past 24 hours.
A spokeswoman for e-mail security services firm MessageLabs said the company had intercepted more than 1 million copies of Zafi-D since it first started squirming Tuesday.
'This one is spreading far and wide because it uses multiple languages. The worm has been programmed to change its disguise and communicate in the language of the target. That makes it a bigger threat,' Cluley said.
According to a Sophos advisory, the worm arrives with the subject line 'Merry Christmas,' 'Buon Natale!' or 'Joyeux Noel!,' depending on the location of the recipient....[more..]
